In a heartening display of Indigenous empowerment, Brooke Metchewais and Heather Wolf Ear have emerged as the winners of the Miss Indigenous Canada 2026 competition. This achievement is not just a personal triumph but also a significant moment for Indigenous communities across Canada. The competition, held in Six Nations of the Grand River, brought together 125 delegates, each representing their unique cultural heritage and community contributions. What makes this story truly remarkable is the personal journey and the impact these women aim to have on their communities. Brooke Metchewais, a Plains Cree woman from Cold Lake First Nations in Treaty 6, has been working in Indigenous health services and serving as a board director for the Child & Family Services Society. Her win is a testament to the power of community service and the desire to uplift those around her. Heather Wolf Ear, a Blackfoot woman from Siksika First Nations in Treaty 7, is currently finishing a master's degree in sustainability and working in the Indigenous Clean Energy youth team. Her win is a personal triumph, but also a way to honor her past and the missing and murdered Indigenous peoples. The crown and sash, crafted by Kymberly Farmer, a Mohawk woman from Six Nations of the Grand River, symbolizes the interconnectedness of Indigenous communities. It is a labor of love, beaded with 24-karat gold, and represents the spirit and responsibility that should be respected. The competition itself is a powerful statement, with delegates judged based on their personal interviews, essays, cultural presentations, and community scrapbooks. It is a celebration of Indigenous culture and a platform for these women to advocate for change. Metchewais plans to use her new platform to speak with local and national governments about the need for more funding for Indigenous child and family services. She believes that the current funding models are not working and that they fail to provide sustainable and long-term support for families in need. Wolf Ear, on the other hand, dedicates her win to the crisis of missing and murdered Indigenous peoples and to her uncle, who passed away in 2013. She sees the competition as a full-circle moment, allowing her to let go of grief and honor her past. In my opinion, the Miss Indigenous Canada competition is more than just a beauty pageant. It is a celebration of Indigenous culture, a platform for advocacy, and a powerful statement of empowerment. It is a moment that should be celebrated not only by the winners but by all Indigenous communities across Canada. The impact these women have on their communities and the broader Indigenous population is immeasurable, and their achievements should be recognized and celebrated.
